Classical Music Festival in Cortland
The Arts and Wine Festival is being organized by the Cultural Council of Cortland County and will feature works of local visual and performing artists. A number of food vendors will also be part of the festivities, and an admission fee will get you into the wine tent where 17 wineries will present over 125 different varieties of wine and six different flavors of wine ice cream (with a five-percent alcohol content) for tasting and purchase.
The music will begin at 11:30am with Dana Huyge (viola) and Josh Oxford (piano) in a performance that will include a sonata by Hindemith. Huyge, a Cortland native, is now a graduate student at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. Oxford, another Cortland native, is now a full time staff accompanist at Ithaca College. The pair will also be performing a recital at 5pm on August 14 in the United Presbyterian Church in Cortland.
From 12:00noon until 1:00pm, "Mr. Trumpet" Arslan Kachadourian will take to the stage with his classic jazz trio. His trumpet playing and vocals reflect both the style and the spirit of Louis Armstrong with its warm and expressive tone. He will be accompanied by Dave Robbins at the piano, who has performed with Jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie. Mike Burgevin on drums, is a member of the percussion trio DrumatiCymbalism that has performed at shows and festivals throughout the region. This trio will be followed by guitar soloist Eric Pearson, a graduate student at Ithaca College. Then Sharon and Bill Holbert will present songs of musical theater accompanied by Marina Gorelaya (piano). They will perform solos, duos and music for larger ensembles with the help of some special guests.
The Highland Winds Clarinet Quartet will perform from 2:00pm until 3:00pm. Comprised of four professional musicians from the Syracuse area, The Highland Winds is a subsidiary of the Highland School of Music. The group is capable of both sensitive performance and interesting interwoven harmonic textures. This is one performance that you will not want to miss! Next will be a performance from the Fall Creek Brass Band - an ensemble of high school and college students, playing a variety of styles including Jazz, Funk, Hip-Hop and New Orleans music.
From 4:00 until 5:00pm, the Trillium trio will perform. Lois Pfister (violin), Maria Mucaria (flute) and Marina Gorelaya (piano) are among the best private teachers in the area, and enjoy performing music as well. Their performance will include works by Franz Schubert, J.S. Bach and a trio by Kulhau (Op. 119 in G). Then the Cortland Area Flute Ensemble (CAFE) will take the stage. Directed by Mucaria, CAFE started out as an alternative ensemble for SUNY Cortland flute students. Gradually, the ensemble has added members from the community and local high schools.
At 5:15pm the Crown City Brass will present works from the Renaissance through more contemporary music. Members of this ensemble include Mark Baxendell and Brian Shelley (trumpets), Terry Martens (French horn), Mike Poole and Phillip Rumsey (trombones) and Cheri White (euphonium).
This music festival is presented by Cortland Music and the Cultural Resources Council.
